Personal Safety Foundations

Set the ground rules: prevention over reaction, awareness without fear, and where responsibility actually sits.

Everyone starts here. It frames every decision model used in the seven modules that follow.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • Explain the prevention-first premise of StreetWise Women™ Level 1.
  • Distinguish calm, habitual awareness from anxiety and hyper-vigilance.
  • State where responsibility for an offence always sits.
  • Describe the Level 1 outcome chain: recognize, avoid, disengage, escape, get help.

Inside this module

4 sections, delivered as short video, audio narration or text — your choice.

1.1What this program is — and is not

4 min

Level 1 is a civilian personal-safety program built around prevention. It trains the decisions made before a situation escalates: what you notice, how you read it, and what you do about it while you still have easy options.

1.2Awareness without fear

4 min

Fear is not a safety strategy. It is exhausting, it narrows your thinking, and it cannot be sustained — which is why people who try to stay afraid eventually stop paying attention altogether.

1.3Responsibility and language

4 min

Responsibility for an offence sits with the person who chooses to offend. Always. Training reduces exposure and increases options; it never distributes blame.

1.4Apply it this week

4 min

Pick one route you walk regularly — to transit, to your car, to a regular evening commitment. Walk it once with a single question in mind: where are the places I could stop, be seen, or be helped?

Scenario practice

Guided decision exercises with feedback on every option. Scenarios are educational and controlled — you may decline any exercise without giving a reason.

  • The evening that felt off

You are leaving a work event at 9:40 PM. It is a familiar area and you have walked this route many times.

  • The favour at the door

You are entering your building at 7:15 PM. A man carrying two shopping bags reaches the door just behind you.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Safety is decided before a situation escalates, not during it.
  • Calm background awareness is sustainable; fear and hyper-vigilance are not.
  • Responsibility for an offence always sits with the person who offends.
  • Level 1 trains one chain of outcomes: recognize, avoid, disengage, escape, get help.

Knowledge check

This module closes with 8 quiz questions. The Level 1 final assessment is 25 questions and the pass mark is 80%.
